A recent headline from the New York Times proclaims Study Finds That Online Education Beats the Classroom. There has been quite a bit of buzz about this article (or at least its headline) but not much analysis. Nicholas Carr looks more carefully at the original study and is much more reserved in his conclusions.

Forbes magazine online has an article interviewing leaders regarding what they learned from reading the classics. The interviews are excerpts from the book “Power Ambition Glory” by Steve Forbes and John Prevas.

James Daniels has a blog post this morning about children and metaphors. He points out that we often underestimate how well children can think abstractly just because they express themselves concretely. Metaphors are important because they connect abstract thought and concrete expression.

The Marketplace of Ideas podcast has an interview with Alex Beam, author of A Great Idea at the Time: The Rise, Fall and Curious Afterlife of the Great Books. Beam is very critical of the commercial venture of Robert Hutchins and Mortimer Adler called “The Great Books” but he appreciates the great books.

Houston is recovering from the largest power outage in history. About half of Houston was without electrical power a week after the hurricane. The second half will take much longer to restore than the first half since the easiest repairs were done first. Our building had power shortly after the storm, though presumably many of our families are still without power at home.

Covenant had a work day on Saturday to remove some large limbs that fell on the back part of the school property and to clean up around the school. Classes began today and we are returning to normal.

The phone company had to change our phone number in order to solve the problems we had with the first number that they gave us. It’s a long story and I don’t understand it. Our new new number is (281) 373-2233.

Covenant Academy has been located at Cypress Bible Church since the school began in 2003. We are now in the process of moving into our beautiful new location about 10 minutes west of our previous home.

Our old phone number is supposed to ring at our old office for the rest of the week. The new phone number is (281) 758-3200, though we’re having a little trouble with that number today as we get things set up. Our web site and email have not changed.

Our school’s web site now includes a custom search engine by Google to allow visitors to search the site.
